  • Discover a sustainable, healing life - both personally and professionally.

Overview:

A intensive, longitudinal program for individuals to foster evolving holistic clinical, personal, and global perspectives in the healing arts, creating a foundation for being more effective and compassionate health care providers, and more informed and engaged consumers or advocates. This program will engage the participant in multi-level learning and personal transformation. The access to faculty mentors, study support groups, interdisciplinary networking, and the wealth of curriculum and experiential learning, promises to be a unique offering for the professional who is looking to take their healing work to a whole new level. Through interactive, experiential, self-exploratory, and dialectic processes, professionals will explore the following five areas and their role in health and healing:

  • Transcultural, cross disciplinary and integrative health care approaches
  • Environmental and Ecological issues in healing ourselves and our planet
  • Interdisciplinary Community Building and healthy interpersonal Relationships
  • Personal Ecology—Choices for a Healing Life
  • Spirituality and opportunities for transformation

Our environment and teaching methods are purposefully chosen to increase our comfort with paradox by valuing all of the following:

  • Power of intellect and of the body, emotions and spirit
  • Power of knowledge and of wisdom
  • Power of externally validated and objective ways of knowing and the power of internally validated and subjective ways of knowing.
  • Power of both rationality and intuitive truth.
  • Power of reason and of passion and discernment
  • Power of rigorous skepticism and of wonder.

This program is co-sponsored by the American Holistic Medical Association www.holisticmedicine.org and is ideally designed to meet the needs of physicians and health care practitioners who which to expand their understanding of and comfort with the evolving field of Holistic Medicine.

Structure: This 18-month Professional Training program in “Transformative Medicine: The Alchemy of Healing” will begin in Octomber of 2006, and will include both onsite learning during four, week-long retreats between 2006 and 2008, with distance learning via assignments, web-based instruction and faculty support during the interim months. Specifics of curriculum breakdown and content in each retreat are contained in Curriculum section, including an example day. The four week-long retreats are in October 2006, April/May 2007, October 2007, and May 2008, usually running Friday to Friday. The program intentionally spreads the retreats over a period of time that impacts 3 calendar years, to make it easier for professionals to obtain necessary leave time from work, and spread out CME dollars. Break times over holidays and summers support the balanced approach to life and encourage participants to have family and personal vacation time.

All content is initially introduced in person, by the instructor, during a retreat, and is followed up and explored in more depth through directed home study, with web and phone support. Most home-based content consists of a weekly lesson and assignment, available via video on the web-site. Participants expected time commitment (apart from personal practice) outside of the retreat sessions is an average of 5 hours per week, plus one experiential exercise.
(See the outline under curriculum.)

Objectives: At the completion of this program, participants will be able to:
