The Global Medicine Education Program

Faculty & Student Comments

"...one of the finest training programs with which I have ever been associated." Bill Manahan, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Minnesota, GMEP 2002-2003 Faculty Mentor

"Global Medicine Education is one of the most important initiatives in our society for bringing healing, consciousness, and spirituality back into health care. This is the medicine of the future." Larry Dossey, M.D., Executive Editor, Explore: The Journal of Science & Healing, GMEP 2002 Faculty

"The Global Medicine Education Student Program provided me with an experiential understanding of the core principles and approaches behind several key non-allopathic systems of medicine. Rather than learning soley from textbook or lecture, we actively participated as both patient and apprentice practicitioner - preparing herbal tinctures, receiving acupuncture, taking a homeopathic history, cooking meals based on Ayurvedic principles. Perhaps the most important feature of the program is the underlying theme of self-healing, made possible through the many small- and large-group sessions in which we listened to one another's struggles, wounds, dreams, and spur-of-the-moment ideas, without any trace of judgment or contempt. For me, GMEP has been among the most transformative experiences of my life."
Mike Hsu, GMEP 2002 Participant

I feel that GMEP helped reinforce personal ideals of what medicine can be. It reminds me of a saying that "we must become a light unto ourselves". I believe that we must learn to practice [these ideals] regularly and to help nurture ourselves in order to be able to help nurture others. Unfortunately, residency and even full-time medical practice requires and enormous amount of time, which makes it difficult to provide positive self-care. I think this theme will be echoed over and over again, until we get tired of hearing it and then say, "What can we do to change it?".
Chill Yee, GMEP 2002 Participant

"Global Medicine has been an informative and transformative experience for me, exposing me to CAM modalities and to the amazing healers who bring these practices to life as well as establishing what will be lifelong connections to a group of wonderful peers."
Spencer Blackman, GMEP 2002 Participant

"Global One has had a far-reaching and long-lasting impact on my life as a human and as a healer. This program gave me back to myself in a way I was in dire need of. It reminded me of the importance of human connection, and showed me what loving, supportive, sustainable community can be like. It instilled a kind of compassion and groundedness that has given me the strength to withstand the pressures of my intern year with grace and ease. I cherish every memory from that month and frequently report on it to others as "one of the most important months of my life". It literally brought me back to center and helped me make life-changing decisions. The person I was in April 2002 in Petaluma is still here. She visits patients and touches them with heart. She impacts the residents and faculty around her by gently challenging certain negative patterns and assumptions, offering acceptance and connection where there might not have been any before. She is able to balance a social life and healthy alone time with her busy intern schedule and many interests. I am so grateful for the experience of Global One. I wish it for every student who is ready to embrace life and people and move forward on their own path toward wisdom and healing at the highest possible level. Thank you for helping us make this a possibility."
Chrissie Ott, GMEP 2002 Participant

"The Global Mediciine Education Program is the most innovative development in the education of future physicians - unique and even revolutionary. The program has assembled a "dream team" of renowned clinicians and educators from multiple universities to mentor highly motivated medical students from across the United States. Both medical students and faculty have devoted significant attention to the process of education as well as the content of the program. There is strong institutional commitment from multiple organizations, including the Institute of Noetic Sciences and the American Medical Student Association."
Gregory Plotnikoff, M.D., GMEP 2002 Faculty Mentor

"Global One [a.k.a. GMEP 2002] is with me everyday. The memory and skills learned give me the strength to keep going in the middle of those long nights when I feel that deep, sad tiredness seeping into my bones. I would not be the person nor the physician I am today without my Global One experience, and I am forever grateful to have been fortunate enough to have been exposed. I am now working to fulfill my dream of starting an integrative holistic healing retreat center which will have scholarships for inner city youths, and also working on my certification in Acupressure in order to practice more integrative health care in my residency clinic."
David Pakter, GMEP 2002 Participant

"I have been affected by this program in a way that cannot be adequately described with words. I feel as though it woke me up. My experiences stirred parts of my spirit that had fallen asleep. I have been changed in a fundamental way. My eyes, ears, and heart are fully open. I have shifted my life paradigm from one coated in fear to one filled with light. I finally learned how to be a doctor. I spent four years learning the science of medicine yet felt that I still didn’t know how to really help others or myself. During this month, I learned the meaning of healing. I experienced unconditional love. My heart is full to overflowing. I am now prepared for an internship year that I was dreading. I have a strong medical knowledge base in addition to a reenergized spirit and enthusiasm for service. My work and existence has meaning again."
Christa Fagan, GMEP 2003 Participant
